Ultimate Guide Reviews
Cafe Colucci This is my favorite Ethiopian restaurant. I usually go with a friend or two and get the veggie combo. I have been told their veg items are vegan yet I still sometimes wonder if there is ghee in the preparation. That hasn't stopped me from eating there! Excellent food. I've had a few misses here and there but considering how many times I've been there it's to be expected. 4.5 stars 2010-12-02
The Plant Cafe Organic I've had two excellent meals here. I had the thai green curry with brown rice and tons of veggies, and the cornmeal encrusted tempeh served with mashed sweet potatoes and a bunch of veggies. Brought home a chocolate cupcake with peanut butter frosting and my friend had the pumpkin cupcake (both vegan). Absolutely great. Rather expensive here but super fresh and delicious with tons of choices. 4.5 stars 2010-12-02
Berkeley Bowl Excellent assortment of produce, although at least half of it is not organic. Impressive bulk isle. They make a vegan curry lentil soup that is fabulous. I would love to see some vegan items in their store bakery. Good fresh made sushi (the brown rice/avocado-veg rolls are excellent). The new location is large with ample parking, but I find the store a bit odd in the layout. 4 stars 2010-03-30
Berkeley Farmers’ Market (Saturday) Love this farmers market but I try to get there really early to avoid crowds. Veggie heaven! Besides all the produce you could want, they also have a Primavera stand where I can get my fix for vegan tamales, stone ground corn tortillas and sikil-pak (roasted pumpkin seed sauce--drool!). They have Hodo fresh tofu, Core Elations and Morell's bread (love the "Local Loaf"!). 4.5 stars 2010-03-30
Pizza Plaza The reviews listed here for Pizza Plaza are getting old--I think they have definitely improved over the years. I like to build my own vegan pizza with whatever looks good. I once craved spinach/chickn pizza with a "white" sauce pizza and they created a light tahini sauce which was great. Nice vegan desserts. I believe they also have gluten free crust now, on request, for any of you GF diners. 4 stars 2010-03-30
Thai Delight Excellent veg choices here. The pumpkin curry and basil tofu are awesome. My friends always get the fried sweet potato appetizer. It's nice that they have brown rice as an option. Parking can be tricky in this area during the dinner rush but once the bakery a few doors away is closed, you can park in their small lot. 4 stars 2010-03-30
La Cascada Good spot for a quick meal when you are in a hurry. They can help you order vegan by substituting various items and they are always very nice about it. The thai wrap is great (with tofu instead of chicken) as is the mediteraneo burrito (without cheese). Like the salsa bar. 4 stars 2010-03-30
Herbivore I always want to like Herbivore more than I actually like Herbivore. A few dishes shine but the rest are lackluster. Not bad, just boring. The shawarma used to be my favorite but they changed the chickn and the new brand tastes weird. The red curry dish is very good. They do have the double layer Black China German Chocolate Cake. Hard to find the double layer--worth a trip for just that! 3 stars 2010-03-30
Core Elations I get their vegan sushi wraps at the Tuesday Berkeley farmers market. My favorite is the macadamia nut avocado roll. They make a few raw wraps that are very good, too. Excellent smoothies (whole meals for sure) and desserts like the vegan chocolate mousse. 4 stars 2010-03-30
Great Wall I live near this restaurant so I've been here many times due to convenience. They have a large variety of gluten meat dishes although much of it tastes the same. I think their veggie dishes are better than the "meat" dishes but liked the kung pao chickn recently. They do have real seafood so be careful you don't order shrimp thinking you are ordering fake shrimp. Pot stickers are really bland. 3.5 stars 2010-03-30
Saysetha I've been going here off and on for years. Very nice owners/employees. The decor is outdated and you have to be buzzed in the front door but it doesn't bother me. I usually get take-out here. Large menu with easy substituions of tofu or gluten or veggies. Their gluten is really good--fluffy and soft. Pad see ew (without egg), Gaeng gari gluten curry and veggie spring rolls. Yummy! 4 stars 2010-03-30
The Stanford Inn Love, love the Stanford Inn and Ravens Restaurant. Very expensive once you get the final bill with all the taxes, etc. added on, but absolutely beautiful location, tasty vegan food (have the scone with your free breakfast!), and I can bring my dog. He loves the river beach just down the street. It's worth the splurge but do know that it's not a fancy resort type place. It's rustic and lovely. 4.5 stars 2010-03-29
Flacos Love their rice and beans, yum! With a big salad, that is a great meal. The hot salsa is too hot for me and I can usually eat very hot, spicy food. I don't like the flavor of their fake meat products though -- it's too bad they don't have tofu or seitan instead. 3.5 stars 2010-03-29
Picante I really like Picante. I don't go here often since it's a little out of the way down on Gilman, but there's plenty of parking, and outdoor seating when the weather is nice.. They have a separate vegetarian menu which makes things easier for those of us ordering veg. My fav is the roasted poblano plate, served with warm corn tortillas. Yum! 4 stars 2010-03-29
Nature\'s Express Had an excellent lunch here: tried the special of the day which was a curry chickn wrap, and my friend had a chickn burger. Very fresh and tasty. We sampled the mac&cheese which was just okay. Friendly, helpful service and reasonable prices. Will be going back! 4.5 stars 2010-03-29
Gather Had a wonderful meal here. We started with the Polenta Encrusted Mushrooms appetizer with "ranch" dressing (v). Shared a salad with hazelnuts, fennel and miso dressing (v). For a main course, the Seared Fava Leaf Chickpea Cake (v), and for dessert the Chocolate Cake (v). (v=vegan). We also had two speciality cocktails. We were stuffed silly and very happy. Everything was DELICIOUS! Try it! 4.5 stars 2010-03-29
The Juice Bar Collective I am surprised to be the first person to add and review this cafe! I've been stopping here for years whenever in North Berkelely and in need of a quick meal. Wonderful vegan and veg salads, sandwiches, wraps, smoothies and hot items. They aren't veg only but are very veg and vegan friendly. Fabulous vegan chocolate pie!!! It's a co-op, owned and run by the employees. 4.5 stars 2010-03-29
