Kaffa Ethiopian Cuisine | Incredibly nice and accommodating woman owner. Their teff injera is the best I've had. Their spicy lentils and mixed vegetables are excellent, and their kale is very good. The split peas are plain, but what can one say that's bad about split peas? Nothing. Delicious, healthy, hearty food. Also, it travels well if you take food to go. I haven't tried the side dish yet but plan to on my next visit. | 2015-04-18 |
Nourish Cafe | I love that such a healthy vegan place is in my not so vegan friendly neighborhood. (There is only 1 other vegan restaurant that I know of.) I had the Nourish Bowl and a chocolate banana smoothie. Both were excellent. The place seems pricey, but I know they use quality ingredients. On other visits I'll get just one thing at a time. Excellent food, excellent idea for a restaurant/take out place. | 2015-04-18 |
Source | I must be the only vegan who doesn't like this place. I used to like their Cuban black bean soup, even though it comes with white bread, but last time I was there vegan pig is now in it. I don't like vegan meats. All that interests me now are the desserts, more fun than tasty. Burgers and dosas can be ok depending on who makes them. Good place for groups to meet. Fairly easy parking. | 2014-11-05 |
Veggie Grill | Great place. So glad it opened not too far from me, just across the GG Bridge. Friendly, clean, tasty food. The menu items have thorough descriptions so it's easy to figure out what you want to order. Favorites: caulimashed potatoes with mushroom gravy, onion rings, the Latin succotash bowl. They seem to seasonally change menu items. They have an app and website where you can order ahead. | 2014-11-05 |
Sanctuary Bistro | Friendly and VERY helpful owners, a true family business. Pleasant ambiance. Brunch food was good, though the scramble was too salty for me. The dinner items I've had, one entree was a bit plain, but, all have been excellent. Everything is both vegan & gluten free. Frequent tweaking menu, so new items, but old favorite items might disappear. I don't like coconut so no desserts for me. | 2014-11-05 |
Animal Place\'s Vegan Republic | Great store. I no longer seem to use the online stores because between all my local stores, including this one, I seem to find everything I want locally. Very reasonable prices. Easy parking. Vegan owner. What's not to love?! Good to great selection of things depending on when you go. They make product announcements on their Facebook page, and they will hold hot items for you if you call. | 2014-11-05 |
Timeless Coffee | I haven't been for brunch, but I've had their desserts, scones, quiche, etc.baked goods and all were delicious. If this place was easier for me to get to I'd be there a lot. Friendly, helpful people too. | 2014-11-05 |
Shangri-La Vegan | This is the old Manzanita. Same location, same type food. Delicious and very healthy food. Staff very friendly and helpful. I think this might be in the top 5 healthiest places to eat out in the SFBA. It's reasonably priced given that everything is organic. I really appreciate that there is a large volume of vegetables included in the meals, not true of many vegan restaurants. Ditto: whole grains. | 2012-02-23 |
Thai Idea Vegetarian | Not a great neighborhood and could have done without the tv in the place. BUT: The food is delicious and it's presented so artfully. I'll definitely be back. I know someone who said their medium spice was hot so that's what I ordered and I found it too mild, but still tasty. It's wonderful to have Thai food without worrying about fish sauce, and when we said no egg, they knew what vegan is. | 2011-12-05 |
Nature\'s Express | I wish this was in San Francisco! The negatives: out of many things, rather surly service, & check your food before you leave to make sure it is as ordered. One of our things wasn't. Healthy & delicious black bean whole wheat southwestern burger & sweet potato fries. Excellent garden pilaf too. | 2011-07-20 |
Souley Vegan | Yum! Fantastic collard greens, mac & cheese, lentils, & strawberry ginger drink. Now want to try the sweet potato pie, yams, black eyed peas, cornbread, mashed potatoes & gravy, and probably other things too, but it will be hard not to order the collard greens, mac & cheese, and lentils again. Very friendly workers too. | 2011-05-20 |
Loving Hut | Service friendly & nice but not prompt and definitely lackadaisical. Every Loving Hut location has a different menu. Spinach tofu soup good, Pad Thai with broccoli instead of vegan shrimp very good, tasted spicy green bean with tofu & it was excellent. Food good. Vegan desserts didn't try but looked good. A variety of rices which is a nice touch. | 2011-03-21 |
Green Papaya | I ate there once when I thought it was all vegan. I've since found out that there is shrimp paste in some dishes and I may have consumed it. One dish did taste fishy to me and I didn't like that dish, but sea veggies, osyter mushrooms, etc. taste fishy to me; I thought that was it. I will not be dining there again. I do not trust this restaurant. | 2011-03-15 |
Trader Joe's | I find myself shopping here more & more. Parking lot assignments well organized & even long line of cars moves quickly. More & more vegan & organic foods available, including produce. Shopping less at Rainbow, Whole Foods, small markets, and getting at least 25% of my food here. They have a vegan foods list available on their website. | 2010-12-15 |
Slice Of Life | Need to get up there more often. Uneven but most very good. Pizza with tofu ricotta & mushrooms & garlic excellent; I love tomato so next time will ask for extra sauce. Place is friendly, very vegan friendly, gluten free friendly & reasonably priced. Reading other reviews makes me want to try their breakfast items. | 2010-10-20 |
The Corners of the Mouth Natural Foods | Fun store in a charming building. Okay selection of various items. A good place to shop in Mendocino. | 2010-10-02 |
The Stanford Inn | The restaurant was temporarily closed (dining in lobby/bar area) but still worth 5 stars. Beautiful grounds, beautiful rooms, great service (the fireplaces are prepared for lighting & cleaned every day), convenient location to Mendocino, very dog friendly, and friendly in general. Gorgeous. Lots of amenities. Really enjoyed the private deck & view of grounds. Worth the splurge. | 2010-10-02 |
The Raven\'s | My new favorite restaurant, even though in lobby/bar eating as restaurant closed for work. Millennium's desserts better, but all else better here. Amazing breakfasts (polenta & enchilada), amazing dinners (manicotti, pizzetta, soup, homemade bread & spreads) & water infused w/fruits & edible flowers. A superb dining experience! Excellent & friendly service. Dinner all vegan, breakfast 90% vegan. | 2010-10-02 |
Cinnaholic | Very friendly workers & great customer service. Got 5 frostings/2toppings & got a free roll when one of the frostings (maple, the one I most wanted to sample) was unavailable. Will have to go back and get one for just myself. Had one with coffee frosting & it was excellent. Non-vegan friends liked 3 other frosting flavors. Generous frosting!!! Now there is a frequent buyer card-buy 9 & get 1 free. | 2010-09-15 |
Saturn Cafe | While the outside isn't as striking as their Santa Cruz location, the interior is even better: funky, fun, quieter. The garlic fries which I tasted needed more garlic; I'd ask for extra. The service is extremely friendly. Great location near the university and very kid friendly. I need to eat there: I remember enjoying the veggies & brown rice w/sauce. They're very vegan friendly, in my opinion. | 2010-08-28 |
Gracias Madre | 2nd visit big improvement in flavors & got peppers side to ramp up the heat. One of my dream restaurants!: vegan, organic, Mexican! Very pleasant atmosphere inside w/some outdoor seating; large tables. Very friendly service. Excellent squash and kale sides. Excellent blue tortillas. Salsas better the second time/more spice. I will be returning! | 2010-01-04 |
Tony Tutto Pizza | There's a new vegan menu, almost as long as the laco-veg menu! Good selections. Cheeseless. One want to try that doesn't travel well w/arugula & pine nuts. Mushroom+ one and olive ones good. Organic & they drizzle olive oil on the pizzas AFTER they're out of the oven. Not pizza I'm used to: more like pizza crust with toppings open sandwiches. Good vegan soup. Owner very nice. | 2009-06-05 |
Sugar Beat Sweets | Tried 4 flavors 1/4 cupcake each: cinnamon, peanut butter, orange, chocolate mint. The frostings were delicious and the cinnamon frosting was amazing. The cake part was too crumbly for my taste, although these were purchased at Rainbow Grocery on a Friday and it's possible the texture of the cake was due to it not being fresh; I don't know. | 2008-11-01 |
Udupi Palace | Excellent chutney. They knew what was vegan and made a point to tell the kitchen all vegan food and they were very nice. The dosa filling was good, the vegetable curry was ok. I didn't care for the white rice or the dosa bread. I might try one of the uthapam pancakes another time. I do like South (and East) Indian food but even the spicy dishes seemed bland to me. | 2008-10-08 |
Peace, Love & Cupcakes | These are delicious. I tried the Mexican chocolate (my favorite) and the strawberry, lemon and the lime, all also excellent. They're 250 calories each which sounds good, but I could eat 1,000 calories of these in a snap. Addictive for this cupcake fan. It's so easy to be vegan! | 2008-10-07 |
New World Vegan | Very nice wait staff who helped set up tables to our specifications for a large group. Best pad Thai I think I've ever had. Pancakes appetizer too oily but most ordered looked good. | 2008-09-22 |
The Usual Suspects Cafe | Have been there twice. The vegan lasagna with a great side salad and the cakes are delicious. The vegan pizzas look good. Want to try the vegan burger too. The people there are really nice & the atmosphere is fun; interesting decor. Entertainment upstairs some evenings and upstairs available for special parties. Much of the food is homemade. Found on street metered parking both visits. | 2008-06-29 |
Enjoy Vegetarian | Excellent tofu vegetable curry and potato samosa appetizer. Friendly service and neighborhood feel. Extensive vegan menu. I’d like to go back and try other non fake meat dishes; there are a lot of fake meat options, but plenty to try that don’t try to mimic meat as well. | 2008-03-16 |
Vegan Sweeties | Laurie generously donated 2 pkgs. of cookies to the BAVeg Vegan Book Club. We got to try the brownie (light & fluffy) and chocolate chip (traditional soft texture). They were both delicious. A package would make a great host/hostess gift. Now I REALLY want to try the peanut butter chocolate chip, the peanut butter, & also the Russian tea cakes/sugar cookies. Order arrived in perfect condition. | 2008-01-27 |
Earthbeam Natural Foods | They will order items they don't normally carry; they have good customer service. Tasty soups. Quality produce and a fairly good selection of items for such a small store. They have their own all day World Vegetarian Day celebration, at least they did in 2007. | 2007-10-17 |
Layonna Vegetarian | Friendly service, beautiful decor - great view of nature from tables in the rear. The food was good, a bit bland for me (wish had brought my crushed red pepper as I usually do), but very large portions, and reasonably priced, and enough vegetables which is not true at many places. Several large round tables for groups of 10-12. | 2007-07-22 |
Lucky Creation | No ambience but good for sharing a meal with people you know when your attention is on the other people and the food. They have dishes that look delicious that aren't on the menu such as the soft wide noodle dishes. Had a reasonably tasty mushroom noodle soup with added broccolli. Large portions and very inexpensive. Worth another visit. Nearby easy parking. | 2007-06-25 |
Pizza Plaza | Delicious. Huge selection vegan food including pizza toppings & sizes.Better with extra red sauce & double toppings. Pesto & red w/veggies excellent. Opened very late-11:40 not 11, but guy very nice and helpful. Wish whole grain crust but guess white more "authentic" flavor. They deliver: fortunate I'm in SF as I'd eat there too often. If you take some home the cheese melts well in microwave! | 2007-04-28 |
New Ganges | Food made from scratch. If you like spicy, ask for D (the most spicy) as food is mild otherwise. Owner is very proud of food and gave us free dal. He mostly left us to our conversation but did come back frequently to suggest foods and to talk a bit. Only Indian vegetarian restaurant in San Francisco - nonvegan items clearly marked. | 2007-04-23 |
Bok Choy Garden | New owner has done a terrific job. It's a very pleasant place to dine. ALL menu items now on the printed menu(s); no more boards on the walls. Good stuffed shiitake mushrooms with broccoli and taro appetizer and many other dishes. Owner friendly and responsive. Food delicious with many choices. | 2006-12-11 |
Saturn Cafe | Yes, garlic (thin) fries are a must and vegan peanut butter vanilla milkshake really good (these 2 together should be called the BAVeg Special!); they also have good veggie & brown rice with either ginger garlic or peanut sauces - vegan and vegan optional items shown on menu. Friendly but not prompt service when busy. Music can be loud; sometimes it's off entirely: better for conversation. | 2006-08-05 |
Feel Real Cafe | Boy, did this place bring me back to the 60s! Good food. Especially enjoyed the veggies & noodles in a ginger sauce with a veggie burger patty on top. You need to call before you go to make sure they're open. | 2006-07-20 |
Golden Era | Most everything is faux meats; even their "tofu and veggies" is meat like. If you don't enjoy that, or even if you do, one delcious choice is the tofu and spinach soup. Unusual atmosphere for a veggie restaurant: kind of an old world feeling. | 2006-07-20 |
Juicey Lucy's | Kind of a funky place. Very small. Very limited menu but the food is really good. Tasty soups and desserts. Friendly place. Parking is easy on weekdays if you go for an early lunch. | 2006-07-20 |
Cha-Ya | Variety of delicious Japanese foods. Same menu as Berkeley. Pleasant and clean and service was good. Told they plan to open for lunches in a couple of months. Cash only for now. | 2006-04-24 |
The Plant Cafe Organic | Usually like only vegetarian restaurants but this place has many vegan options (marked) and is mostly organic w/ healthy choices. Noisy when crowded. Most diners I've seen order flesh dishes here. | 2006-02-22 |
Cafe Gratitude | Delicious & healthy. Good cooked grain bowls & soup as well as raw food. Service not good but friendly. Larger and better atmosphere than original location. Enjoyed the soy mucho grain bowl (no soy.) | 2006-02-06 |
Vegetarian Gourmet | Delicious food that doesn't taste at all oily. I don't like faux meat-there was still plenty for me to eat: tofu, curry, vegetable, chow mein, appetizer dishes all enjoyed. Friendly and quick service. | 2005-12-17 |
Geranium | "Eat Loaf" superb: best of its kind I've had. Service extra friendly and top notch. Most entrees vegan & vegan dessert available and good. Earth Balance spread at table for bread! Pleasant atmosphere. | 2005-10-02 |
Herbivore | Good breakfasts: fruit pancakes & scrambled tofu-ask & for $1. they will add spinach/tomatoes/mushrooms. Lentil loaf good comfort food but too salty. Noisy. Uneven. Fave of my out of town friends | 2005-09-12 |
Herbivore | Parking lot 1/2 block away if no st. parking. Good rice & beans, breakfasts. Many friends like portabello sandwich but find too oily. They will do substitutions. Noisy. Uneven. Upgraded decor. | 2005-09-12 |
Shangri-La | Only complaint high oil but they will do low/no. Best won ton soup & pie pa tofu balls with brocolli. Especially good brown rice. Certified kosher, one of only 3 SF places; only veg one. Friendly! | 2005-09-07 |
Hulu House | Been 3 x/5 dishes tasted & just don't like the food, but am a picky eater. If find self back there will be happy w/veggies&brown rice only. Not commercial area but difficult parking. People very nice. | 2005-09-07 |
Manzanita Restaurant | Very healthy!!!, simple, plentiful, inexpensive, tasty food. Can't go wrong here. Menu changes every meal. Very casual atmosphere. Hate cooking kale but love eating it?: this is the place for it! | 2005-08-31 |
Cha-Ya | Delcious food and lots of variety. Highly recommend getting there before they open L/D & putting name on list to avoid long waits. Nice explanation of "vegan" food right on the front of their menu. | 2005-08-26 |
Bay Area Naturally | Always worth picking up when it comes out twice a year. Pretty good local guide but far from comprehensive. Just a fraction mentioned of what's out there. | 2005-08-19 |
BayLeaf Cafe | Best lentil soup-picky eater and don't like all but can tell ALL good. Veg/etc. books/mags/lit for reading. If this place was in my neighborhood I'd be there a lot. Friendly. Sometimes out of things. | 2005-08-19 |
Zao Noodle Bar | Vegan dishes ARE vegan, BUT on their menu lists vegan & vegetarian options, BUT ONLY their paper to go menu says: "vegetarian includes fish" and staff couldn't think of what in veg dishes wasn't vegan | 2005-08-09 |
Greens Restaurant | Not much vegan but staff/menu clear what is. Thai curry (added my own crushed red pepper), etc. good; only one vegan dessert but good as Millennium's. Superb view and friendly service. | 2005-08-09 |
Cafe Gratitude | Expensive but can feel full on a small order. Good spreads & patés with flax crackers and live breads. Omnivore in group enjoyed special enchiladas. Do have quinoa & red rice plates. Rest raw menu. | 2005-08-09 |
Rainbow Grocery | Real gem of a health food store. Not exactly 100% vegetarian: they do carry supplements that have gel caps. Generally helpful workers and great products. Plus that no section for dead animal flesh. | 2005-08-09 |
New Leaf Market | Always worth a trip when in area. Just a few blocks from Dharma's vegetarian restaurant. Have their own deli and a fairly good selection of health food products. | 2005-08-09 |
Staff Of Life | Interesting health food store. Miss Café del Sol eatery that used to be next door but they do have a deli. Fewer vegan/vegetarian choices than they did years ago. | 2005-08-09 |
VegNews Magazine | This is the ONLY publication that I always read cover to cover. I adore this magazine! Very grateful for it. A great vegan resource; also good support for those who live in less vegan friendly places. | 2005-08-09 |
Whole Foods Market | Good large selection health food store. Lots of vegan items. Too bad about the (luckily in the back of store) huge cases of organic dead fish and cows, etc. animals in their flesh area. | 2005-08-09 |
MaggieMudd | Great place to take out of town friends! Think even better vegan ice creams than Soy Delicious. Can get their ice creams at health food stores and restaurants. Orange chocolate chip/all good. | 2005-08-03 |
Millennium | Delicious soups and desserts.Seasonal menu. Like their winter (and late fall, early spring) menu which has winter squashes and more chocolate dessert options. Still my favorite restaurant. | 2005-08-02 |
Dharma's Natural Foods | Love the small Bo Thai (portions are huge!) and the jamocha soy shakes when ask for them thick. Mostly vegan: what's not is listed on the menu. Willing to come from SF to eat here. | 2005-08-02 |
Ananda Fuara | Not much vegan (heavy on lacto-ovo) but what they have is good. My favorites are the veggie burger vegan style and some of their creamy (vegan) vegetable soups. The ravioli is good too. | 2005-08-02 |
