Di Lac No ambiance, but exotic (to me) Vietnamese foods. Lemon-crusted tofu (salty but good!), veggie "shrimp" and "pork" spring rolls w/ spicy peanut sauce (very good), fried rice (so-so), bitter melon stuffed w/ tofu & mushroom (wow! that melon is bitter!), "lobster" red-colored fake meat (good!), and my favorite, the veggie stuffed "cake" (savory) kinda like a "hot pocket." Buffet ready at 9:30AM. 4 stars 2010-05-11
La Copa Loca Show-stopping vegan gelato in the Mission! Once I got a TRIPLE-SCOOP of soy chocolate, blood-orange sorbet, and soy vanilla, and wasn't even full, the ice cream was so yummy! I often get the soy milkshakes. They make egg-free and dairy-free ice cream cakes (made to order), sundaes, etc. No vegan whipped cream yet, but I keep encouraging them to get some! Ck out their crepes & sandwiches. 5 stars 2010-04-06
Gracias Madre Brussel sprouts with vegan parmesan-style cheese: DELICIOSO! Yum! Chile Relleno for my entree, a big roasted chile filled with veggies and nut cheese; not batter-fried; it was OK. The rice, beans, tortillas, and other fixin's that came with it were good. My boyfriend ordered the Mole enchilada which was fantastic (I tried some!). We love the upscale ambiance and lively Mission St location. 4.5 stars 2010-02-25
Herbivore Herbivore has a huge menu with an eclectic mix of American comfort food and ethnic dishes from around the world. & they have fabulous vegan breakfasts! I don't understand why there's a hellacious line outside Boogaloos every weekend morning & plenty of empty seats at Herbivore. The only bad thing I ever ordered was the wasabi noodles. I couldn't finish, and I'm OCD about finishing my plate! 5 stars 2010-01-07
Papalote What I hate about this place is that the tacos are more expensive and the wait is longer, and the food is much LESS TASTY than your average taco joint in the Mission. That's great that they have tofu and all, but I'd much rather have the Southwest Burrito from El Tonyayense or the Veggie Tacos from El Metate. THERE you find some tasty eats, not here. *sigh* 3 stars 2010-01-07
Boogaloos I love the polenta and roasted vegetables breakfast. They soy-rizo and Fake Steak to serve with breakfast, too. A hipster-oriented greasy spoon that caters to vegans, hurray! Get there before 10:00 a.m. on weekends to avoid an epic wait in line. Or get there after and have fun people-watching and dog-watching in the Mission as you wait for your table. 5 stars 2010-01-07
El Metate THE BEST VEGGIE TACOS in town! I don't know how they do it, maybe it's the spices and raw cole-slaw-esque veggies on top, but the tacos are SO YUMMY! YES! This is where it's at. I never order anything other than the 2 veggie tacos, no sour cream, no cheese. Once I ordered the same tacos with guacamole on them, and it watered down the zesty flavors. So no more experimentation for me! Eureka! 5 stars 2010-01-07
Cafe Gratitude Fab vegan restaurant. I've shared Cafe Gratitude with 4 meat-eating friends on 3 different occasions, and they all loved it. JAN.2009 UPDATE: Still as delicious and fun and quirky as ever. The only problem is that it's pricey so I don't eat there very much. But I don't eat out very much, period, for the same reason. 5 stars 2010-01-07
Cha-Ya Wonderful cooked vegan food! Everything with subtle flavors that are *just right* and very tasty. One of my favorite restaurants. 5 stars 2010-01-07
Weird Fish i had the seitan with sesame ginger "fish n chips" ... chips were made with both yams and regular potatoes, very yummy! and i had the "WEIRD SALAD" which was also very good. fun ambiance, a great date place. Go there at 5 PM on Sunday, you will have ZERO WAIT IN LINE, guaranteed. 4.5 stars 2010-01-07
The Breakroom Cafe VEGAN PUMPKIN ROLLS! Kind of like cream cheese rolls! Excellent vegan sandwiches and soups. The place is kind of small, with small tables, but the food is excellent. It's on the corner with light coming in from both sides, and they have art for sale and live DJs sometimes. Ck the events page for details: http://www.breakroomcafe.com/events.html 4 stars 2010-01-07
Loving Hut This is my new favorite veg place to eat in San Francisco! So many wonderful things to try on the menu! I have been here twice, and have loved all the dishes, especially the cabbage salad and the mango salad. Can't wait to go back! I love the location in such a vibrant Chinatown location, just steps from North Beach. 4.5 stars 2009-07-24
St. Francis Fountain A really old-fashioned diner that tries to please vegans! They even use the word VEGAN (gasp!) on the menu! I love the toasted vegan sandwich, the vegan chili, and the vegan chorizo hash. The tofu scrambles are good, too. I like the vanilla soy milkshake, but I wish they had more flavors of vegan ice cream, and I wish they had vegan whipped cream. 4 stars 2009-07-24
Udupi Palace Very tasty! I like the uddampam thick pancake as well as the thinner dosa. One time we got the huge paper dosa, which is very dramatic, but I actually didn't like it as much as the regular dosa. The paper thin dosa seemed more fried and oily and felt less healthful to eat. We also liked the lentil donuts as an appetizer. 4 stars 2009-07-18
Sun Rise Restaurant Vegan French Toast in the Mission ... at Sunrise! Vegan Fajitas made with Tofu, Vegan Tamales, Vegan Chorizo (Soyrizo), VEGAN PUPUSAS!!! And they have VEGAN clearly marked on the menu! I love the spinach salad with tofu, a big hearty salad for vegans (except that one doesn't have the special "Vegan" label; maybe they thought it was too obvious). 4 stars 2009-07-18
Atlas Cafe THE NO-CHEESE PIZZA IS TO DIE FOR!!! You must try it. I think the pizza has mashed yams instead of tomato sauce. Bluegrass on Thursday nights at the Atlas is lots of fun. And they have science lectures sometimes, too. 5 stars 2008-06-24
Mimosa Cafe I like this place ... they have a nice ambiance, and the waitress was very knowledgeable about what is vegan and what isn't. They didn't have as many vegan selections as I expected, but the waitress helped us figure it out. 4 stars 2008-06-24
Whole Foods Market They have vegan donuts! The food bar is fantastic. Loved the garlic-white bean soup and vegan veggie soup. Rice bowls made to order are tres delish! They have a nice little eating area so you can dine with friends. And you can compost just about all the paper plates etc. This is my new fave place to eat out for lunch when I'm at work. 5 stars 2008-06-24
Souley Vegan I had the BBQ tofu with collard greens and mac&cheese (all vegan). LOVED IT. The crispy tofu (made to look like catfish?), cornbread, potato salad, and vegan southern-style pies all looked really good, too. As of June 24, 2008, their new hours are Tues-Sat, 11 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. CLOSED on Sunday & Monday. 4 stars 2008-06-24
Health Nuts This is a one-woman operation, Jean makes all the smoothies and hot menu items (13 vegan choices) by hand and is dedicated to organic. Delicious hot soup and veggie plates. She's still got 37+ smoothies but recently replaced her wheat grass & natural juicers with a Pink Berry organic yogurt machine b/c not enough people were buying the wheat grass, etc. Let's go HealthNuts, bring the juices back! 5 stars 2008-02-14
Vegan Sweeties Traditional choc chip cookie and choc brownie cookies were very good, my non-veg boyfriend tried them & said ... almost tastes like the real thing! Not sure what he meant by "almost." I've been wanting to find good vegan cookies that I can send as birthday gifts that can "pass" as "regular" cookies for non-veg friends ... I hope Vegan Sweeties will be able to help. Further testing is needed! :) 4 stars 2008-02-11
All about Herbs @ Paris Cafe Eyes: BEAUTIFUL FOOD! Next time I will take pictures! Mouth: MMMM, exciting and delighfully seasoned! Tummy: Happy and satisfied! Heart: Overjoyed, they stayed open past closing time to serve us! Body: energetic and revitalized with healthy vegan food! Wallet:oops, CASH ONLY! Luckily, I had enough moo-lah, it's cheaper than Millennium; less ambiance of course, but the food here is VERY GOOD. 4.5 stars 2008-01-17
Kearny Street Pies LOVED IT. They serve hot, hand-held VEGAN savory pies! I was so hungry, I got 3! Spicy eggplant/olive/tomato; curry/potato/yam, and curry/garbanzo/yam. ALL WERE DELISH!!! You can order 12 pies in advance to bring for parties for like $34. YUMMY! Note: this business sells PEASANT STREET PIES and brings them to the Financial District; nothing is baked on site. They also serve veg pies w/ cheese. 5 stars 2006-12-20
Club Waziema All you can eat veggie combo plate is 6 days a week now; includes INJERA bread, green salad, veggie stew w/ carrots, potatoes, tomatoes, cabbage, garlic, plus sauces of lentils, split peas, mushrooms. 4 stars 2006-02-25
Pizza Orgasmica The best pizza I ever had! Ordered it with NO CHEESE, loaded with veggies and flavor. The crust was an ethereal delight. 5 stars 2005-11-06
Naan 'n Curry Not many vegan choices; but the potato naan & onion naan were out of this world! The mixed veggies were in an unappetizing greasy brown sauce; however, it was tasty and spicy, and cheap, so it was OK! 3.5 stars 2005-11-02
New World Vegan Nice decor, friendly waitstaff, right by Oakland 12st BART. Gumbo with collard greens & brown rice was excellent! Also loved the "healthy rice" clay pot. Amazingly decadent vegan desserts. Yummmay! 5 stars 2005-10-08
Ital Calabash I love the no-meat treat & seasonal soups served in gourds. But the girl who works there sometimes openly discusses her anti-white sentiments, which can be pretty un-nerving. Still, great food! 4 stars 2005-10-08
Borobudur Restaurant This non-veg restaurant has a few delicious vegetarian dishes. Be sure to ask that they do not use fish sauce on any of your vegetables. Tahu and Terong Balado (spicy eggplant & tofu) is a must try! 4 stars 2005-10-08
Golden Era Old-fashioned decor with a menu that wouldn't be characterized as innovative or inspirational, but it's a vegetarian restaurant located DOWNTOWN (where I live), and for that, I'm very thankful! 3 stars 2005-09-12
Ananda Fuara Great food for ovo-lacto vegetarians (like the famous Neatloaf), but the menu isn't spectacular for vegans. I took a veggie-skeptic friend there, and he loved it, but of course he didn't order vegan. 3.5 stars 2005-09-12
Millennium I tried Milennium once; paid $200 for dinner for four, and we weren't exactly oohing and ahhing over our food. The waitstaff were inattentive, and our food took forever to arrive. Still, it was OK. 3 stars 2005-09-12
Herbivore Great place to grab a vegan dinner before checking out a show at The Independent. I love the SHWARMA! 4.5 stars 2005-09-12
Medicine New-Shojin Eatstation Trendy yet friendly atmosphere; nice selection of sakes; perfect launching spot for a girl's night out or a satisfying (and not too heavy) dinner before a night of dancing. Try the Medicine Roll! 4.5 stars 2005-09-12
