September is our One Year Anniversary
It was a year ago this month that I hosted a vegan dinner at "Small World Cafe", bringing together mostly local Vallejo/Napa veg people and exploring the possibilities of having regular get-togethers. It was a lot of fun, and soon followed by regular outreach at the Vallejo Farmer's Markets and our popular Vegan Food Parties, all contributing to the increasing awareness of the scattered and hidden population of compassionate & healthy eaters in Solano and Napa county.
We had a wonderful day at Unity Day last weekend in Vallejo. Welcome to our new subscribers; if you're on a path to becoming vegetarian or vegan, please feel free to reach out to me if you need support, and be sure to mark your calendar for the next Healthy Veg Discussion and Support Group meeting on October 8th. Our book club this month is an excellent opportunity to learn more and discuss different views on our relationship with animals, and how our food choices reflect upon us.
"Consuming animal products has been considered normal by most of us for all of our lives. We all have fond memories of family and friends at holidays and other special occasions, and there were always animal foods of various sorts served... The purpose of this book is ... about helping you to think clearly about something that you regard as a moral issue that has been nagging at you... we ask that you please try to get past your reaction to see whether you think what we are saying makes sense."
- Gary L Francione & Anna Charlton, Eat Like You Care: An Examination of the Morality of Eating Animals
"The three hairy aliens I live with are my favorite beings on the planet... there is no one I love like my dogs ... Some of us dogaphiles are cat-crazy, too. And some of us even have strong feelings for animals we've never met.... They may not be as cute, cuddly, accessible, or relatable as our dogs, but we recognize their capacity to feel. And in this recognition, our own humanity is reflected back to us.... this book is a call to arms to my fellow animal lovers to be better animal lovers. It's an invitation to be more than just good parents to the cats and dogs we live with; Beg is a batle cry to wake up and rise up on behalf of the world's animals."
- Rory Freedman, Beg: A Radical New Way of Regarding Animals
I've been vegan for 25 years. The veg community is like a second family. It is rejuvenating to connect with others making conscientious choices, better and more informed choices, that minimize our impact on our planet and the other animals we share it with.
I encourage you to be an active part of our small group of thoughtful, committed citizens; we are being the change we want to see in the world. Particularly with such a small group as ours, your participation and support makes a huge difference in what we can accomplish. Come celebrate a year of activities with us at our next Vegan Food Party on Saturday in downtown Vallejo. Please be sure to RSVP by Friday 5 pm so we have time to send you the directions.
Note, if you've been waiting to host a Vegan Food Party, October & November are open! We've had them primarily in Vallejo, one in Napa (so far), so if you're waiting for one closer to (your) home, this is your opportunity.
Cheers,
Tammy
