Event Descriptions

BAVeg hosts many types of events every month. Most are familiar with a vegetarian organization's usual restaurant dining out activites. In additional to typical veg dinners, we also organize these other great advocacy and educational events.

Every second, 269 chickens are killed in the U.S. for food. That's 23 million chickens every day, or 9 billion every year. Chickens and other animals raised for food aren't just food choices or statistics like "10 billion land animals are killed for food every year in the United States". Join us in our life-saving work to make the world a better place for all animals.

If you would like to attend, check the Events Calendar. If you would like to host an event in your neighborhood, that's welcome, too!

Letter Writing Party (LWP)

This is an event for folks who wish to help animals by writing highly effective handwritten letters to urge compassionate treatment of animals. Letter writing topics and supplies are provided, or you are welcome to bring your own.

No previous experience required, but legible handwriting helps! Participation earns points in our Advocacy Rewards Program.

Vegan Food Party (VFP)

This is our term for potlucks. Basically everyone brings a yummy homemade vegan dish to share, their choice of an appetizer, entree, side dish or dessert.

Meeting over delicious foods with like-minded folks is a fun way to try new foods and dishes, as well as "animal test" new recipes. If you're new to Vegan Food Parties, read more info here

We like to have at least one every month. Volunteers are needed to host events, either in their home, favorite park or community room, etc. No previous experience necessary to host or attend. Just be sure to RSVP! By the way, hosting earns points in our Advocacy Rewards Program.

Leafleting

Only in the world of advocacy is 'leafleting' a verb! But, yes, it is an activity where volunteers distribute information to promote a veg*n diet and raise awareness of the atrocities of industrialized confined animal agriculture facilties.

There are three types of monthly leafleting events:

- Adopt a College Leafleting: In support of Vegan Outreach's campaign to reduce animal suffering, volunteers "adopt" a college and specifically leaflet college students with brochures about vegetarianism and the cruelty that exists in factory farming (intensively confining animals to raise them for slaughter). For more info on this nationwide campaign, visit the Adopt a College website.

If you would like to join our Bay Area campaign, just let us know what school you've adopted and be sure to submit your events to our calendar so others may join you, or perhaps be inspired to adopt their own college. Participation earns points in our Advocacy Rewards Program.

- Extreme Veg Event Leafleting: This is a monthly leafleting with Vegetarian Starter Kits. It involves three great components: walking, leafleting, and sharing vegan food. This is a new monthly activity starting in 2007.

- Singles Leafleting: This is a monthly leafleting only for singles. It involves three great components: walking, leafleting, and -- if Cupid smiles on you -- romance, or at worst, meeting new friends who are also compassionate and like-minded AND doing life-saving volunteer work for the animals.

Note: We believe in compassion & non-violence; we do not engage or support argumentative or disruptive behaviour at BAVeg events.

KFC Cruelty Protest

In support of PETA's campaign for better animal welfare standards for 750,000,000 chickens slaughtered for KFC, we are protesting every month at various KFCs around the Bay Area. The event organizers provides signs for folks, and for those interested, leaflets are available to distribute. For more info on this international campaign, visit kfccruelty.com

Note: We believe in compassion & non-violence; we do not engage or support argumentative or disruptive behaviour at BAVeg events.

Everyone is welcome to join us at this cruelty protest. Bring your family and friends who care for animals. Participation earns points in our Advocacy Rewards Program.

Street TV

Taking slaughterhouse footage "MEET YOUR MEAT" to the Streets of San Francisco, and beyond. Employs a mobile TV/VCR unit. Schedule varies upon who's interested in organizing and setting up. Participation earns points in our Advocacy Rewards Program.

Book Club

We have two book clubs that meet throughout the year. These are informal discussions of a preselected book. Unlike other book clubs, vegan refreshments that everyone can enjoy will be part of the experience (either during or after the discussion). There is a book club for fiction/general books , and a separate book club for vegetarian/animal rights books. The veg/AR book discussions will be part of the Compassionate Living Program.
