Through sun, wind,
and fog, BAV distributed thousands of pieces of literature last
month in San Francisco, the Haight Street
Fair, Veggie Fest,
and the two-day Pride Festival. With every piece
of literature distributed, we planted a seed for compassion and
good health, to all parts of the world, as we had visitors from
Santa Cruz to San Francisco to Sacramento to South Africa to
South Korea at our educational and information table. To our
Bay Area visitors who became our newest members – welcome!
We look forward to seeing you again soon!
Thank Yous
We would like gratefully acknowledge and thank
our volunteers and supporters who made our participation at the
Haight Street Fair and two-day SF
Pride Festival possible.
Haight Street volunteers: Gabe, Mat, Regina, Warren, Tammy & Chris
Pride Volunteers: Tammy & Chris
were the 'anchors' on both Saturday and Sunday; they did the
set-up, tabled during the day, and did the takedown at the end.
They also had lots of help!! On Saturday, they were joined by
Priya, Val, George, Amy; leafleting: Brenda, Emily, Robin & her
friend; for Sunday, Mat, Nicole, Warren, Carla, and Johanna;
leafleting: Jen, Lisa & Warren.

We also want to give special thanks to Nicole
and Priya for their help with the literature. PCRM, PETA,
and Vegan Outreach were
also very generous in providing literature.
Additionally, these Donors that
made our presence at SF Pride possible:
Karen, Michelle, Warren Jones, Nicole & Regina, Linda Phillips,
Paul, Loretta, Bob Gotch, Priya Rath, Mat Thomas, Nancy Orr,
Thava, George Gibbs, & Carla Din. We are also grateful to
support from Sun Flour Baking for
providing 600+ yummy vegan cookie samples for visitors. Donna's
Tamales also stuck with us, providing 'vegan' stickers that
we gave out to vegans who visited us. Thank you!
On Saturday, a couple who visited our booth in 2003 as carnivores,
returned in 2004 as vegans...

How much is too much?
When it comes to email,
it all depends! Some don’t think twice about 300-400 emails
a month, while others think find 50 emails daunting or just right.
If you’re new or a long-time member, here’s a recap
of the mailing list and their subscription options:
"SFBAVEG" is our biggest
and primary list; it is a discussion list (members can post).
It includes general Veg/Animal Rights Discussion, Reviews, Local
News & Events, Monthly
BAV Newsletter, with an approximate volume of 200-350 messages/month.
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/sfbaveg
"SFBAVEG-EVENTS" is
an announcement only list; the events from SFBAVEG are re-posted
to this list, with an approximate volume of 40–50 messages
a month. It also includes the BAV Monthly newsletter.
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/sfbaveg-events
"BAV-NEWS" is our newest
email list for our Monthly newsletter.
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/bav-news
Subscription options: for SFBAVEG/SFBAVEG-EVENTS, some folks
prefer to receive the daily digest (a single compilation of messages
for a daily period) or, if they have a Yahoo ID, no-mail (read
the messages in the web archive online). For more information
on this option, click
here
And, for folks who live on the San Mateo coastside, we also
have an additional email list called "COASTVEG" to
post local coast events. (Editor’s note: We love it when
there’s a
Vegan Food Party that’s only minutes away! It’s not
a coincidence that we picked Montara State Beach for the annual
4th of July picnic, or that camping trips happen on the coast.)

Recipe of the Month
Summer is the season for vegetarians! Take advantage of the bountiful
in-season and organic produce with one of our favorite summertime
recipes:
Angel Hair Pasta with Fresh Tomato Sauce
(from The American Vegetarian Cookbook by Marilyn Diamond)
Pasta:
8 oz angel hair pasta, cooked according to directions
Fresh Tomato Sauce:
3 lg ripe tomatoes, cut into 1/2" dice
1 lg garlic clove, minced (2 tsps)
1/4 cup chopped fresh basil (or 2 tsps diced)
1/4-1/2 tsp salt
freshly ground pepper
2 tbsps extra virgin olive oil
Combine all ingredients for the sauce, mixing well. If you have
time, let the sauce sit for 30-60 minutes. Add half the sauce to
piping hot pasta, mix, and then top pasta with remaining sauce.
This is a wonderful, very fresh, in-season sauce.
Editor's Tips: When we make this, we try to do so when we know
we won't be seeing anyone the next day as we love to add lots of
fresh garlic. The fresh tomato sauce also makes a great topping
for bruschettas. Hey, if you're looking for a simple yet tasty
recipe for the next Vegan Food Party, try this!
