Meat Market
After seven years, Erik Marcus, author of
Vegan: the New Ethics of Eating, has a new book: Meat Market:
Animals, Ethics, and Money. Meat Market offers a compelling critique
of animal agriculture. In his talk on Sunday
11/14 in Mountain View, Erik Marcus will look at the history of animal agriculture,
and chart the decline of its ethical standards. Despite the
worsening plight of animals, Erik’s message is hopeful
and optimistic. He offers ideas and strategies to combat cruelty
that can be embraced by meat-lovers and activists alike.
Copies of Meat Market will be available for
sale and signing. You can download a free copy of Vegan: the
New Ethics of Eating from Erik's website: www.vegan.com
Erik Marcus has asked BAV to coordinate an
extended book tour when he returns in mid-February. If you're
interested in having Erik speak in your community or for your
group, please contact
us.

Get Active with BAV!
BAV has two purposes -- to support and connect the existing
veg & animal rights community, and to educate/promote vegetarianism
to the general public. In addition to our many social activities,
we also have monthly
advocacy events (letter writing parties,
college leafleting, KFC protests, etc).
Volunteers are the backbone of our organization,
and make nearly everything we do possible. To streamline communication
with folks who wish to be more actively involved with BAV and
promoting vegetarianism locally, we have a new mailing list:
BAV-ACTIVE. Unlike SFBAVEG and SFBAVEG-EVENTS, this mailing list
is solely for the discussion, planning, or promotion of advocacy
events, strategies, and ideas for Bay Area Vegetarians. We will
also post volunteer opportunities to this list.
So, if you want to help make a difference, please sign-up for
this mailing list and let us know YOUR ideas for making the Bay
Area a friendlier place for vegetarians and the animals!

Best of Veg
Don't worry, it's not too late to vote for
your choices for BEST OF VEG 2004.
We sponsor this annual contest
to support and recognize the best in local vegetarian restaurants
and services. With this year's contest, we are also recognizing
the other component to a strong vegetarian community: organizations,
events, and activists.
So please show your appreciation for
what makes living in the Bay Area so veg-friendly and vote today! With thanks to the following local & veg-owned businesses,
we will again have prize giveaways to random voters: Body Technician,
VegNews Magazine, and Sun Flour Baking.
Flyers are also available to encourage voting at YOUR favorite restaurants.

Do the Write Thing!
The writing is on the wall, err, paper! With 4 writers at the
Thursday letter writing party, and another 8 at the Saturday
one, we are making our voices heard for compassionate treatment
for animals. If you'd like to join us, mark 11/18 or 11/20 on
your calendar.
Please help us get the word out about the
LWPs -- please print and distribute these flyers at local spots
where animal-friendly people will see them.

Celebrate Turkeys
- Don't eat them!
We wish everyone a wonderful, cruelty-free Thanksgiving day celebration
with family and friends. With thanks to our volunteer hosts Kim,
Jordan and Amy, BAV is sponsoring three community dinners this
year in SF, Oakland, and Pacifica, respectively. Please see event
calendar for full details. We recommend RSVPing early to reserve
a spot!
If you need ideas on what to bring or
serve, PCRM used recipes from
Jennifer Raymond, author of one of our favorite cookbooks, "The
Peaceful Palate", to put together a complete
Thanksgiving dinner with compassion and good health. East
Bay Animal Advocates visited a free range turkey farm and put together
this report www.free-range-turkey.com
A google search for "vegan Thanksgiving" turns
up a plethora of other ideas and resources. If you'd like to
organize a community dinner, there's still time. Just contact
us to coordinate.

Recipe
of the Month
Veggie Pate
This month's recipe is
a winner year-round, but especially yummy during the holidays.
It tastes a lot like stuffing. Whenever we have brought this
to VFPs or prepared it at parties, it's always been well-received.
If you have any leftovers, it's great in sandwiches and also
freezes well.
Ingredients
1.5 cups sunflower seeds
.5 cup whole wheat flour
.5 cup nutritional yeast flakes
2 tbsp lemon juice
1 raw potato, grated
small red onion, diced or 4 green onions, sliced
1 stalk celery, diced
1 carrot, grated
2 tbsp oil
1.5 cups warm water
seasoned with: thyme, basil, sage, salt & pepper (start
with 1 tsp each, then to taste)
Unless you have a food processor, you'll
get a workout! Dice/grate the ingredients as needed, grind sunflower
seeds, then mix with remaining liquids, flour, and seasonings. For
the herbs, we like 2 tsp sage, 1 tsp ea. thyme & basil,
and salt/pepper to taste.
Bake at 350F for 1 hour until golden brown. Let cool.
